Poulenc Concert for organ, strings and timpani

'Half monk, half bad boy,' is how Poulenc was sometimes characterized in his day. In his concerto for organ, string orchestra and timpani, these two sides of Poulenc alternate repeatedly. The solemn opening, which refers to Bach's Fantasia g-moll (BWV 542) shows Poulenc's serious side. But as soon as the Allegro enters, the fun splashes off: not music for church, but for the concert hall, or perhaps even the cinema.
